The Kyra Macy Foundation is a non-profit animal rescue organization 501(c)(3) dedicated to placing abandoned dogs and cats in loving homes. The Kyra Macy Foundation fosters animals from overcrowded shelters (usually at high risk of euthanasia) until they can be placed with a permanent family.

All of our animals are spayed and neutered and receive full medical care. The placement process is a critical component of our mission as the personalities of both the animals and the adopters are carefully considered. At The Kyra Macy Foundation, we believe that every animal can become a treasured family pet.

Our Story

Almost a decade ago, Liz and Terry Pao opened their hearts to a dog in need of rescue and that simple act has changed their lives. Now, ten years later, they have launched The Kyra Macy Foundation which will focus on total wellness of dogs and cats but will also fund their dream of providing a place where abandoned and abused animals get a second chance.

Their journey began in 1999 with visits to area shelters.  What they found gave them significant pause.  The shelters were understaffed, the animals caged like furry criminals, and the shelter resources were lacking.

As they scanned the numerous animals in need of a home, they happened upon a dog, almost unnoticeable, cowering in a corner.  Upon inquiry, they discovered that this dog had been placed at two different shelters and had suffered unimaginable abuse.  The wound on her nose, missing fur, and general dull appearance provided the evidence.

Liz and Terry opened their hearts to this dog and named her Kyra Macy.  Kyra Macy thrived under their care and attention and that of their veterinarian. Her first bark after three months was no doubt a shout for joy!

Since that time, Liz and Terry have continued to pursue their dream to focus on animal rescue full time.  A chance introduction to the founder of PetConnect Rescue, Lizette Chanock,  is moving both organizations in the right direction. On September 2, 2009, Lizette, along with her board of directors and their highly dedicated volunteer group, became part of The Kyra Macy Foundation. Together, the Foundation can and will do more for animals in need than ever before.

While Terry, Liz and Lizette strategize about the next steps for The Kyra Macy Foundation, they owe a debt of gratitude to the law firm of Arnold and Porter, and specifically, Brian Wildstein, who donated time to make the merger possible.  Special thanks is also due to Susan Dankoff for bringing these two organizations together.

What started as a simple desire to rescue one dog has laid the foundation for rescuing thousands.  For more information on how you can join the many volunteers currently supporting these efforts, contact (301) 299-3798.
