Our Story
A decade ago, Liz Gavin Pao and Terry Pao opened their hearts to a dog in need of rescue and that simple act has changed their lives. Ten years later, they launched the Kyra Macy Foundation. Their journey began in 1999 with visits to local shelters. What they found gave them significant pause. The shelters were understaffed, the animals caged like furry criminals, and the shelter resources were lacking.
As they scanned the numerous animals in need of a home, they happened upon a dog, almost unnoticeable, cowering in a dim corner. Upon inquiry, they discovered that this dog had been placed at two different shelters and had suffered unimaginable abuse. The wound on her notes, missing patches of fur, and general dull appearance provided the evidence.
Liz and Terry opened their hearts to this dog and named her Kyra Macy. Kyra Macy thrived under their care and attention and that of the veterinarian. Her first bark after three months was no doubt a shout for joy.
What started as a simple desire to rescue one dog has laid the foundation for rescuing thousands.
